One of the most important things to start off with is building the student - tutor relationship. It's important for a student to be able to trust their tutor and feel they can be successful as well. When a relationship is established, the student's tutoring experience will flourish.

While tutoring, I look for the student's individual literacy behaviours through observations over time, informal assessments, running records and the student's educational history and records from the parents, as well as former or current teachers of the student.

Starting with the student's strengths, I teach the student to make connections between what he/she DOES know to what they DO NOT know. Building on the strengths of a student, helps build confidence and risk taking for new knowledge.
