Student Studying Tips
Helpful Hints for Students!

In The Classroom...
  • Before class, glance through the text book on the days topics.
  • Go To Class!  Its the easiest solution to raise your grade!
  • Being there means you have to be paying attention, and not daydreaming.
  • Listen for anything the professor repeats, usually this is a clue that this is important!
  • Pay attention to what your professor is writting on the board.  Its important.  If they seem to underline, circle, raise their voice during the discussion, it is even more important!
  • Takes notes.  Make sure that after the class you will be able to understand your notes.
  • As soon as you can, after class go over your notes since the lecture is still fresh in your head.
  • If you do not understand something from a lecture, ask a fellow student or the professor after class.

While Reading...
  • Find a quite area to read, no distractions from what is important!
  • When reading make notes of any bold or italic words, usually these words stand out for a reason.
  • Write down any questions that you may have while reading.  When your done, if you can not answer your questions with what you have read, re-read it.  If you still do not understand, ask your professor.
  • Spend time on the chapter summery, and any other "End of the Chapter" sections.
  • Diagrams are a great visual representation of what they are trying to explain.  Pay attention to them.
  • After your done reading, make sure you understand what you read and what they are trying to explain.

Test Taking...
  • Read all of the questions first.  The easiest ones should be your first priority.
  • Take your time.  Read each question until you understand it 100%
  • On multiple choice questions, pay attention to what the answer is not.  Narrow the choices down to just a few.  When you have the odds at 50 / 50 use your best guess.
  • If your spending a lot of time on one question, move on to the next.
  • Bring everything you need! Pencils, Pens, scratch paper, and blue books if you need them.
  • Make sure you have a watch or can see the clock to keep track of time
  • READ THE DIRECTIONS FIRST

    Other Tips...
  • Keep a "to do" list.  Prioritize them and also add dates items need to be completed.
  • Use a calendar to show when items are due and when they need to be done.
  • Do not study with the TV on, or with the radio on, you will not be focused.
  • Sleep!  All nighters rarely work.  Your brain needs rest to work properly.
  • Never turn in homework late.  There are no excuses.
  • Use Mnemonics when you trying to memorize information.  For example,
      • Kings Play Chess On Fine Grain Sand.
      • Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species.
  • Studying with a classmate helps.
  • If you do find your self daydreaming, close your book and take a walk to get it out of your system.
